We offer these practice locks with a host of user-selected options:  SC or KW keyway; Choice of top pins (standard or pick resistant); Choice of pinning scheme (5 or 6 pinned).  Additionally, these locks are repinnable (you can rekey them at will) either through the conventional re-keying method or simply by "popping" off the removable top chamber retainer with a flat blade screwdriver, dumping the contents, and creating your desired combination by re-arranging the existing bottom pins.  The top retainer is then easily snapped back into place without the need of tools.  (For an even easier rekeying experience, consider our EZ Rekey practice lock!)

CutAway style practice locks are recommended for beginners to the art/skill of lock picking, whether he or she be a hobbyist or a student of the trade.  By making visible the inner workings of the lock cylinder, a student can learn a lot in a very short time simply by observing the results in real time of his or her lock picking technique.  Once an entry level of skill is achieved, the same lock can be of equal use as a "standard" practice lock (simply by NOT observing the inner parts as the lock is picked).  This means you need not purchase standard practice locks in addition to cutaways.

Cut Away Locks for Picking Practice and Educational Training Aids

The top portion of the lock, also called the pin bible or top chamber, has been precisely milled in such a way as to reveal the top pins and springs without allowing them to escape.  This gives the user an unimpeded view of those components and an opportunity to monitor the action of any key being inserted and, more importantly, the results of his or her lock picking attempts.  

We've also milled a slot at the foot of the top chamber that gives a clear view of the shear line.  When a working key is inserted (we provide one working key with every practice lock), the plug can be rotated and this gives a view of the pins in the plug forming a smooth shear line.

These locks are HANDED - the right-handed model is actually cut away on the left side of the top chamber and for left-handers the lock is cut away on the right side.  This is because, in the act of picking the lock using a pick in one's dominant hand, there is a tendency to want to lean to the opposite side to view the cut away area.  Right-handers will lean to the left, and it's opposite for left-handers.  Be sure to select the proper handing when you make your purchase.
